Energy storage expert honoured

Patrice Simon, Académicien

Patrice Simon, researcher at the CIRIMAT, has been awarded the Grand Prix Pierre Süe by the French Chemical Society (the SCF). This prize honours his internationally recognised work on batteries and supercapacitors.

The SCF’s Grand Prix Pierre Süe 2019

Professor in materials science at the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier (UPS) and researcher at the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche et d’Ingénierie des MATériaux (CIRIMAT), Patrice Simon is the 2019 laureate of the Grand Prix Pierre Süe. This prize, awarded by the SCF since 1974, rewards a body of work at the highest level that falls within the scope of the SCF’s activities.

The research honoured by this prize concerns the synthesis and characterisation of materials for the electrochemical storage of energy in batteries and supercapacitors, as well as electrochemistry at interfaces. These works aim to better understand the phenomena taking place in these systems so as to improve their performance to achieve the energetic transition currently underway.

Patrice Simon, a world-class specialist in electrochemical energy storage

After receiving his doctoral degree in materials science from the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (INP-Toulouse), Patrice Simon was named assistant professor at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (Cnam) in 1996, in the group of Prof. Jean-François Fauvarque, holder of the industrial electrochemistry chair. He moved to UPS and the CIRIMAT in 2001, where he started up the ‘materials for the electrochemical storage of energy’ research group. Currently he is the deputy director of the Research Network on Electrochemical Energy Storage (RS2E), a French public/private network of researchers created by the CNRS that is devoted to energy storage devices.

Patrice Simon has been a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France since 2017 and was elected to the Académie des Technologies in March 2019. Among his honours, we can cite the Silver Medal of the CNRS, awarded in 2015.

A 2nd Grand Prix Pierre Süe for the CIRIMAT and for energy storage

Abel Rousset, who founded the CIRIMAT at the request of the CNRS and who was named its first director in 1999, received the Grand Prix Pierre Süe in 2002.

Then in 2011 the Grand Prix Pierre Süe was attributed to the inventor of the ‘all plastic’ battery—Jean-Marie Tarascon of the University of Picardie Jules-Verne in Amiens—actuel director of the RS2E network.
